In this area of the festival, we are offering an insight into the quirky and alternative side of publishing! Not all of publishing is the typical trade paperback type! For those interested in the academic side of the industry, or the audiobook side - this is the place to find out! Come along to talks and learn things about this wonderful industry that you may not be likely to find upon typical research!

All our visitors are invited to attend this welcome talk! A way to launch the festival for this year, this talk will introduce some of our exhibitors, provide tips on making the most out of your experience with us across the weekend, and also point any of you unsure of what to attend in their right direction for your interests! Please do come along, we cannot wait to meet you all!

Insights into Audiobooks (A Lecture)

Presented by Morrison Ellis, Ladbroke Audio

Are you interested in audiobooks but want to work for a smaller publishing house? Ladbroke Audio is a dedicated company created to showcase everything audio from books and podcasts to interviews and drama.

Morrison Ellis, audio technician and producer joins us to answer your questions and give us an introduction into this growing field of publishing. Whether you have an interest in the more technical side of audiobooks or are interested in working with authors to move their work from the page to a new platform, come along and learn about both from someone who knows audiobooks like the back of their hand.

Backlist

Morrison Ellis works in part for Ladbroke Audio and part freelance as a sound design artist. She has been a part of over 500 audiobook projects and recently started her own audiobook company called Sounds Urgent.

Making the Most of your Backlist (A Lecture)

Presented by Frederico Andornino, Editorial Director at Orion Publishing Group

Frederico discusses the important of utilising the content that as a publisher, you already own, and how editorial assistants and those within the editorial team can use currently trends in the market to ensure that books that have been published in the past are republished at the right time! He talks about how to republish these new editions and how changing the focus of the copy can transform the books!

Frederico Andornino has previously worked at Two Roads, an imprint of Hodder & Stroughton, publishing books that include Ruth Hogan's The Keeper of Lost Things

Intr to Metadata

An Introduction to Metadata (A Lecture)

Presented by Emilia Pisani, Director of Metadata at Penguin Random House

Emilia will discuss the importance of something we as consumers may never think twice about; Metadata! From helping customers to find the book they are looking for, to making sure the book is near the top of your google search, metadata makes the world of books go round! This talk will teach you the basics of metadata, and how it can be used daily by everyone in the business to ensure the book experiences the most success possible!

Emilia Pisani has worked in Metadata for over 5 years, beginning her data journey as a Metadata Manager, having previously worked in the editorial team at Simon & Schuster.

Susannah Priede, Victoria and Albert Museum

Book fairs are an essential part of the publishing industry, but are often not common knowledge to those who are not already familiar with publishing. Susannah Priede comes to us from the Victoria and Albert museum’s publishing team to discuss everything book fair.

From London to Berlin, book fairs happen all over the world and can be one of the most exciting parts of publishing, whether you are looking to start a career in sales, or whether you are just interested in book fairs on their own, come along and have all of your questions answered first hand.

Susanna Priede took a job at the Victoria and Albert museum expecting it to be a stepping stone to a larger publisher, but found instead that working for a less conventional type of publisher suited her well. Almost immediately after graduating she secured her role in Sales and quickly found a love for book fairs and everything international.

Digital-First Publishing (A Lecture)

Presented by Claire Bord, Publisher at Bookouture

Bookouture is a digital-first publisher, who pride themselves on attention to detail in a small number of books, rather than publishing hundreds of books they cannot possibly give the necessary time to. Claire is here to discuss the different routes into publishing that Bookouture provide authors with. 

Claire Bond is a publisher at Bookouture, having previously worked at PRH's Michael Joseph, and later HarperCollins with Avon as the editorial team lead.
